  • Switching from PHPFOX to Social Engine

I am still with fox and have not looked at alternatives for many years but have done so recently and must say there are a lot of very good alternatives out there from free and pay for plugins to once of payment at $250 with lifetime upgrades.

So IMHO to remain relative and maintain a growing market share innovation and upgrades of core as well as plugins is essential. Far too many scripts and third party plug in devs make something and then sit back and rake in a regular income but if scripts including plug ins apps are not regularly tweaked a scrip/plugin soon becomes stale.

Some social networks which are very effective have adopted the wordpress business model and are growing exponentially as well as dynamically.

As we all know programming and innovation is a living thing. Scripts need to be the same. So ultimately revenue should and is based on number of users and cost of upgrades. free or nominal but with a large base. 4000 users at $10 dollars is $40 000 pa per plugin for upgrade every year. Some scripts have 200 000 plus users so the math looks very good.

  • Make Money

Feeling better and having to repurchase all the apps makes it an expensive option right now LOL

  • Make Money

The way phpfox is going with foolish choices and gaining a reputation as a mercenary company chasing dollars at expense of customer service a programmer could make a fortune writing a script to port sites to another script there are so many out there and many are free for basic script and make money with apps etc. How any software company can release an upgrade before ensuring all their own apps are compatible absolutely floors me. Then to charge for patching a live site is piracy.

All reputable companies ensure interrogatory of all releases as much as possible with script and all ancillary products and release patches free for any issues.

Just my rant will feel better after a few beers

  • phpfox upgrades life time support/update user

The problem for people like me in Africa is exchange rates kill it for average person. $299 is almost R5000 a full months salary for most and more then the average salary of $50 to $500 the average person earns. looking at a world population of almost 8 billion improving internet access and reducing prices would go whole lot to increasing profits and revenue with a cheap but but higher usage model. I remember a guy had a $5 dating script and a few other things that made him a good income as it was affordable and a quality product. His site is here http://www.tufat.com/

  • CSS PHPFox

I have added this from the phpfox forum for anyone looking to do css changes to their site.

    " Hi JohnJr,
After reading carefully your post, I guess that you want to find out an easily way to change/override phpFox styling code. If I'm right, I can confirm with you that phpFox Theme System can help you:
Solution 1: via tool of Theme Manager:

    • In the theme manager (admincp), CSS section, you can add your custom less code. If you are using your own theme, the customization will work fine although you upgrade the site.
Solution 2: replace core less file with your less file: you don't need to override the code, you can remove or change the code if you want

    • You can see that phpFox 4 styling is base on bootstrap and all code for it locate at PF.Base/less. By default, all less files on this folder will be compiled to css and apply to your site when you rebuild bootstrap core. However, the theme can decide which files will be compiled. Below example may help you understand it clearly:

    • The file PF.Base/less/base/box.less contains code for styling popup on phpFox site. You want to custom it, please clone it to your theme, the clone file path likes as PF.Site/flavors/[your_own_theme]/less/base/box.less. Custom this file or make it empty if you don't want to use its code. Save your change and rebuild your bootstrap. Code in the clone file will be loaded instead of code in original file (PF.Base/less/base/box.less).
-> easy way to custom core less code, right? And you can use this for all of core less files, you can build your own theme without any styling code from Core. "
